How To Put A Line On A Spinning Reel

Put line on a spinning reel

Fishing is a really exciting and fascinating activity. But in order to enjoy fishing, you need to know a few things without which fishing is simply impossible. If you are a beginning fisherman, then you have to comprehend some secrets, for example, how to equip a fishing rod or spinning reel. One of the first issues you need to know is: “How to put a line on a spinning reel?”

It is very important to tie a fishing line on the spool. The simplest solution is if someone does it for you. You can do this in the store when buying a line. But not all shops have a device for winding a fishing line.

If you wind the fishing line on the spool incorrectly, then be sure your fishing will be spoiled. Another reason to spoil the fishing is to wind the old and unreliable fishing line, which will break at the most inopportune moment.

How many lines should you wind?

Winding

Winding should not reach the edge for 1-1.5 millimeters in order not to fall down. But the distance can increase to 2-2.5 mm; it depends on the design of the spinning reel, its quality and the diameter of the line. Therefore, if there is a permanent reset of the line, just increase the distance to the edge by 0.5 mm, perhaps this will solve the problem.

How tightly should you wind the line?

When winding a monofilament or braided line, you must observe the golden mean. You shouldn’t wind with excessive effort, but at the same time, it is important to wind the line rather tightly.

Direction of unwinding

You should wind the line on the spool in the same direction as on the bobbin. Don’t wind in the opposite direction.

How to wind a line from a bobbin without a special machine?

Winding a fishing line

For the correct winding, you need to conveniently put the bobbin with which you will unwind. It is important to fix it so that it does not spin. It will be ideal if you put it on a pencil or screwdriver wrapped with adhesive plaster. Now you need a person who will help you. Give a pencil to your assistant. The spool must be in the same plane with the spool, so the fishing line will twist less. After rewinding, close the bail of the line guide.

In general, there are many ways to fix a spool. Someone clamps it with his toes; others use a drill to rewind.

If you wind without an assistant, then the process often happens with a line twist, so you have to constantly turn the spool and watch that there is no twisting. You can control how tightly you wind by grasping the line with the fingers in front of the spinning reel. But keep in mind that you need to hold the line with foam rubber or a rag or just put on a ragged glove. Otherwise, you can cut your finger.

You should know that there is such device as a winding machine. With its help, it is easy to wind the fishing line on the spool. The only drawback is that it is quite expensive.

Tips to wind a line on different fishing reels

There are several types of fishing reels. Therefore, you can consider how to wind on a particular fishing reel.

Centerpin reel

Centerpin reel

You can wind up to 100 meters of line on a centerpin reel. So if you buy a line of 100 meters, it will perfectly fit this reel.

For the spinning rod or feeder, where there are transmission rings, the line for the centerpin is wound directly on the assembled rod. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t put a spool with a wound fishing line. It is necessary to expand the spinning and pass the fishing line through all the transmission rings. Start with the smallest ring. Unbend the bail of the line guide. Then secure the line to the spool, tie it with a knot. Make several turns evenly, then start twisting the handle.

If the winding is correct, the line must lie exactly as if it is on a sewing spool.

Baitcasting reel

Baitcasting reel

A baitcasting reel is the most advanced reel on the market. It is very important to use a line of the thickness that is designed specifically for this model.

Some fishermen make the mistake of tying a braid or monofilament line to a baitcasting reel. They pass it through the far holes in the spool, which leads to braking. It is necessary to tie only for holes that are close. To put the line on a baitcasting reel, you need to proceed as follows:

  • Tie the line with any knot;
  • Insert the spool onto the spinning rod, and pass the braid through the right ring;
  • Tighten the friction and axial brake;
  • Control the tension of the line (do it with a rag in order not to cut your finger).

Spinning reel

Spinning reel

The thickness of the line should be as indicated on the reel. If the thickness of the braid or monofilament line is larger, it will be very difficult to wind it. If you use a smaller diameter, solid knots can appear when casting. As a result, you lose a piece of braid or monofilament. Each spinning reel is made not only for the specific diameter of the line, but it can also accommodate a certain amount of braid or monofilament. You can find these parameters in the instruction and they are different for various manufacturers. So read the instruction carefully.

Well-known manufacturers try to improve their reels to avoid twisting.

To wind the line on the spinning reel, you should perform it in a crisscross manner or by “turn to turn”. This will be a quality spooling. But do not forget that you do not need to fill the spool to the edge. Leave 1-1.5 mm.

The winding the braided line is not different from the winding monofilament or fluorocarbon lines. Although it is fair to note that fluorocarbon is not used as the main line at all.

Here is a step-by-step instruction for winding the line onto the spinning reel

  • Insert the spool onto your rod.
  • If you have a telescopic rod, pull it out in length.
  • Take the fishing line and insert its end into the rod rings from the very last small ring on the tip and up to the nearest ring to the reel.
  • Now remove the spool from the reel. If you have a reel with a front drag friction, you can switch it at the top of the spool and you can easily remove it. For the reels with the rear drag friction,  just press the button and the spool will be removed from the reel.
  • Tie the fishing line around the spool with an ordinary double knot (when you fold the line twice and make the simplest knot).
  • Pull out the rim of the line guide and insert the spool into place, then close the rim of the line guide into the working position.
  • You can wind the line by rotating the handle of the reel, but try to hold the line with your hands so that it comes into the reel with a slight tension. You can hold the line with your hands close the ring nearest to the reel.

Backing

Backing

After winding the line, you need to add the backing. For this, you can use a used monofilament fishing line or any other cheap fishing line. In this case, the basic requirement is that the backing should be approximately of the same size as the main line and even 0.03-0.05 mm larger. Tie the line with any convenient knot for you. The knot must be small and compact.

You have to wind up the baking so that there is about 1-1.5 mm to the edge of the spool. This amount of fishing line is the most effective for use on any reel. Check once again the winding on the spool, and if the quality of the winding satisfies you, then rewind the fishing line from the auxiliary to the main spool.

To do this, perform all the procedures in reverse order. Remove the auxiliary spool from the reel and set the main one, making the slipknot on the backing. The knots that you got during the formation of the slipknot on the spool and when tying the backing with the main line should be put so that they occupy the extreme position on the spool and do not interfere with the further work of the line.

Of course, it is better to perform this rewinding procedure with an assistant. After rewinding the lines, it is necessary to cut off the slipknot from the spool.
