Saltwater Fishing Line – Which One Is The Best For You?

Fishing line for saltwater

Saltwater fishing has always been popular among anglers since it allows you to fish in many different ways. But at the same time, if you want to succeed in saltwater fishing, you need to consider lots of things. Otherwise, you can be disappointed.

If you want to have success in saltwater fishing, first of all, it is essential to take care of your equipment. One of the most important things you need to have is a right fishing line. For saltwater fishing, the requirements for the line will be quite special and different than for fishing in fresh water.

We can single out the general principles of fishing line for saltwater fishing and some particular, which will depend on the way of catching a particular fish.

General principles will proceed from the fact that the salt water is very aggressive environment both in its chemical composition and in the habits of its inhabitants. You should take into account that saltwater environment has lots of species of predatory fish, that behave quite differently.

Due to these factors, the best saltwater fishing line must be:

  • Resistant to salt water. The effect of salt is very detrimental to any materials.
  • Strong, able to withstand the jerk of fish and a large weight of prey. After all, on a river or lake, a pike weighing 10 kg is a great luck. But on the sea, a cod or halibut can weigh 40-50 kg. Some other trophy specimens can reach 100 kg. Get it? So it is very important to get a strong fishing line.
  • Long enough. It is essential since almost all methods of saltwater fishing are intended for long distances.
  • Abrasion-resistant. The seabed usually has lots of shells and pebbles that are enemies for fishing lines since they can quickly cut the line.
  • Resistance to ultraviolet.

Which type of fishing line is the best for saltwater?

Best saltwater fishing line

This is probably the eternal dispute between anglers about what is better for saltwater fishing – a braid or a monofilament fishing line. Both the braid and monofilament have a preferred “place” for tackles and rigging.

Shock leaders and usual leader are always made of monofilament and fluorocarbon. They are “slippery” and not so damaged by rocks and corals. In addition, the shock leader of a thick monofilament is necessary to pull the fish to the board and put it in the boat. The braided line will almost certainly cut your hands.

A braided line is more suitable for saltwater fishing. There are several reasons. The main reason is that the braid of the desired test (30-50 LB) is finer than the monofilament. It also doesn’t sail too much while drift fishing. After all, the strength of the main line should not be less than 30-50 LB. When fishing at a depth of 100 m in a drift (wind and current), the fishing line will be cast for 150 meters. The thick monofilament will bend and in order to hook the fish, you will need to swing a rod for several meters. This is not always possible, and so the hooking may not be powerful enough.

The braided line has much lower wind and current resistance, so the hooking will be faster and sharper.

Because of the difference in diameters, the braided line has another advantage – you can use a reel of a considerably smaller size. It should be able to spool about 200-300 m of line. This is important since you have to hold the rod with the reel in your hands for a long time.

When choosing a braid, pay attention to its density – the higher, the better. So it would not be strongly impregnated with water.

Which color of the saltwater fishing line should you choose?

Saltwater fishing line color

As for the color, it can be bright, even very bright. Such fishing line will be well visible early in the morning or at night in the light of street lamps. Do not be afraid that the bright coloring will scare the fish. The sea fish is not as cautious as the freshwater fish.

You can find saltwater fishing lines of different colors. They can be green, blue, red, yellow, bronze and multicolored. Any color is good but keep in mind that such colors as blue, red and yellow fade away by time. Green and bronze are good because they will mix with the color of sea grass and will be invisible to the fish.

Multicolored saltwater fishing lines are also very popular because at sea it is very difficult to find a landmark by which you could measure the distance and the number of lines. So changing the color allows you to count the length.

Coastal fishing

Coastal fishing

You can catch the small fish from the shore with spinning or float fishing rod.

The line for saltwater fishing from the shore can be of different strength. Not only the type of fish will affect it, but also the nature of the bottom. If you are fishing on the beach, then it will be sufficient to choose a breaking load of the line from 3 kg since you will probably catch only small fish.

To increase the casting range, you should use the leader. In addition, it will save the main line from the rupture.

A peculiarity of coastal fishing is that you will need to cast a fishing line over a long distance (100-120 meters) because it is difficult to catch fish in shallow water.

You can use both monofilament and braided lines. But if taking into account that the braided line is thinner, hence it will fit more on the reel, and cast will be more distant, then the preference is given to the braided line.

Boat fishing

Boat fishing

The preference is given to the braided line. The main reason for this choice is that at the big depth, the elasticity of the monofilament will interfere. The monofilament line will stretch and at big depth, the lure doesn’t move and play anymore. So you will not be able to control the bite.

Another important factor is that a braided line has a smaller diameter than a monofilament fishing line with the same breaking load. The area of the monofilament is larger than the braid. Hence, the wind and current have a greater influence on the monofilament, so the sail increases.

Trolling at sea

Trolling at sea

This kind of fishing is focused on the use a braided line since the basic requirement is a low elasticity and strength.

But in order to tire out a big fish, you need to choose a thick monofilament line. In this case, the elasticity will be useful. The line must withstand the powerful amplitude jerks that occur when hooking at a depth.

Specialized saltwater fishing lines for trolling are marked “Trolling Line”.

Rock fishing

Since the peculiarity of this type of saltwater fishing is the presence of stones, it is mandatory to use a fluorocarbon leader, which has great resistance to abrasion against stones.
